Global Energy Forecast Foresees Large Jump in Demand by 2030

Worldwide demand for energy will increase by 44 percent in the next 20 years, with developing economies — particularly those in China, India, Brazil, and Russia — accounting for nearly 75 percent of the demand growth, according to a forecast from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). The agency predicts that oil will supply about 32 percent of the world’s energy needs by 2030 — down from about 36 percent today — and that wind and solar power will account for 11 percent of global energy supplies. The EIA forecast does not take into account the impact of a possible global agreement on reducing greenhouse gases. Without such an accord, global emissions of carbon dioxide are expected to rise by a third in the next 20 years, reaching 40 billion metric tons a year — a level that climate change scientists say would sharply increase temperatures and destabilize the global climate system. The EIA forecasts that oil prices will begin to rise next year as the global recession eases, hitting $110 a barrel by 2015 — nearly double the average 2009 price.

Did you know that oil companies are already sitting on 68 million acres of leases that they aren’t even drilling? Which kind of makes you wonder: Why are Big Oil and its allies suddenly desperate to get their hands on the last few places that are still protected — our natural treasures, wildlife refuges, and pristine coastlines? They wouldn’t use the concerns caused by high gas prices as an excuse to grab it ALL, would they?

Big Oil and its allies would like you to think that more drilling will ease your pain at the pump, but that’s not the truth.

The bottom line is this: More oil drilling will not lower gas prices or create energy independence – it will only make the world’s richest oil companies richer.

Average Americans are being squeezed by high energy prices, and the oil companies are taking advantage to push their long-term drilling agenda. They have been spreading a map full of lies though the Internet.

It is worth reading the complete article linked below, but in the end, whether what we are seeing here is the result of real “Peak Oil,” or “constrained oil” is not important. The fact still remains that we must wean ourselves from fossil fuels for national security and environmental reasons:

On April 13, Reuters reported the following from Riyadh:

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah said he had ordered some new oil discoveries left untapped to preserve oil wealth in the world’s top exporter for future generations…

“When there were some new finds, I told them, ‘no, leave it in the ground, with grace from god, our children need it’,” King Abdullah said…

Saudi production capacity stands at around 11.3 million bpd, and is scheduled to rise to 12.5 million bpd next year.

The King’s remarks seem to confirm a statement made last year by Saudi oil minister Ali al-Naimi who, when asked “How high can your production go?” replied, “We’ll get to 12.5 million barrels a day and then we’ll see.”

If the Saudi announcement was a bombshell, American nearly newspapers ignored it. We decided to canvass experts we respect to see what they thought. Excerpts follow:…
