Why even replace your old water heater with an energy efficient standard gas or electric water heater when you can go solar for less?

Why replace your old water heater with an energy efficient standard gas or electric water heater when you can go solar for less (after Federal, State and local government renewable energy incentives are factored in.)?

Maryland Green Power Co. has been selling a residential / small commercial sized solar water heater with 64 square feet of flat panel solar collector space (2 solar panels), drainback system with drainback reservoir, pumps, controller, valves, heat exchanger and all miscellaneous items except for PVC piping which are practically FREE after Federal, State and local solar incentives are factored in.

For businesses, depreciation of this equipment can make this an even better deal.

Check your local codes: Our solar water heater can pre-heat water and send it into your existing water heater tank. Why install a separate solar water storage tank and use up extra space? If your local codes require a double-walled heat exchanger, then we’ll include it in the solar water storage tank at a small extra cost, which is essentially subsidized by incentives anyway.

Best of all, this quality solar water heating system is built in the U.S.A.

More information can be found at the Types of Solar Water Heaters article.
In fact, a 4 square meter flat plate solar water heater is equivalent in heat production to a 3 square meter evacuated tube solar water heater.

The flat plate solar water heaters tend to be a little less expensive, making them, dollar per dollar, about equal to the evacuated tube solar water heaters from an investment standpoint.

Solar energy can help or hurt your energy saving efforts – in the summer it could increase your cooling bills tremendously!

Here’s a simple and elegant solution to the problem: a reversible solar energy reflector / absorber panel which heats your rooms in the winter and cools them in the summer. In addition, it creates an air-tight seal around your windows to further improve insulation!

Many “energy-efficient” windows block solar energy, but do you really want to do that in the winter? These attractive panels help you get the best of both worlds. This might be the most cost effective solar power solution you will find for years!

Regardless of your present heating and cooling system Eco-Flector Window Retrofit can save up to 40% of energy costs and make your home or building a more comfortable place. Did you know that windows are one of the biggest energy thieves in a building? Glass is highly conductive, allowing energy losses with both heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. Glass also has a high solar radiation factor, creating uneven temperatures and unnecessary loads on HVAC systems.

Eco-Flector Window Retrofit is a see through Insulating Panel mounted to the inside of windows, doors or skylights. The panel is manufactured of a metalized, coated, polyethylene sheet laminated to a sheet of carbon graphite PVC that is then perforated and laminated to a sheet of clear polyester.

The insulating panel is reversible, so the reflective surface can face outward during the seasons when solar gain is a problem, and the carbon PVC surface can face outward during cold seasons to reflect heat back into the building and collect convective sunlight for conversion to radiant heat. The panel is held in place with magnets which form a virtually air tight seal and inhibits infiltration, conduction and convection while providing additional dead air space for insulation.

Of all the types of solar power systems available today, solar water heating is one of the most effective so far. Below you will find some links to very cost-effective solar power systems, some of which are very efficient, like the thermosiphon solar water heater which does not even need a pump!

Nevertheless, we carry not only passive and active solar water heaters, but also monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar panels with or without trackers, BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaic Solar Electric laminates, tiles and other materials which integrate into your home’s design and blend with your rooftop), building integrated solar water heaters (not visible from the ground) and solar absorbtion air conditioners (not powered by solar -- these solar air conditioners use a solar heated liquid to create cooling using a hydrophilic heat transfer component.)

Before you pop the cork, read this…

Sunfri Claims to Develop Solar Power Cell Producing Electricity for 5 Cents per kWH

An interesting claim, but I always considered the measurement of solar power production cost in terms of kWH to be confusing, since solar power is actually produced at a cost of ZERO kWH. After all, solar power is free.

It would be more meaningful to discuss the materials and installation cost of solar power per kW, not kWH. For example, we sell Photovoltaic (PV) Solar panels at a cost of about $ 3.40 per watt at the time of this blog post, but solar pv prices are free-falling now thanks to a glut of Chinese solar panel production.

To repeat, the system is sized by rated power in kW (kilowatts), not in kWH (kilowatt-hours), which is a billing measurement. More accurately, solar power PV generation is always dc current, so panel size is specified in units of watts of dc power. AC watts are measured after the inverter which converts dc power to ac power. This measurement is inevitably smaller due to unavoidable inefficiencies in power conversion.

If solar power panels were engines, kW would translate to horse-power output, while kWH would correspond to miles driven. (The engineering purist will want to provide a correction such as average horse power generated multiplied by number of hours driven, which better reflects the work done by the engine over time, but let’s stop now before this gets really boring.)

Anyway, I read somewhere that another company will soon be selling solar power panels at a price of $ 1 per Watt, or about 1/4 the materials cost of the typical system today. They have supposedly sold out their first year’s production, and are capable of producing about 480 MW of capacity per year.

That should take a big dent out of the fossil-fuel based production, if it’s true!?)

Nevertheless, this news will soon become passe, as solar panel over-production (or under-demand in this economy?) will bring crystalline (poly and mono) prices down below $ 3.00 per watt sometime in 2009.

If you are paying more for solar panels, you might want to contact us for a solar quote.
